The trap

Costco membership is annual, not monthly. Gold Star vs Executive (the higher SKU with a 2% reward). You can cancel for a refund of unused membership — Costco is unusually willing — but Executive rewards already issued can be deducted from that refund. Cancel online in some regions, at the membership desk in the warehouse, or by phone. The shop card / gift card balance is not the membership. Costco Travel, Costco Wireless, and a Costco Anywhere Visa are different companies with different cancels. Auto-renew is the trap if you forgot the anniversary.

What fails

• Letting auto-renew hit because you ignored the anniversary email.
• Cancelling Executive and being surprised they claw the 2% reward from the refund.
• Assuming a shop card is the membership.
• Calling Travel to cancel the warehouse membership.
• Destroying the photo card and calling it cancelled while auto-renew is on.
