The trap

Joining is a kiosk. Leaving is a pilgrimage. Most clubs will not take a cancel over the phone or by email. You cancel at the club where you signed up — your home club — or you send certified mail to that address. Monthly drafts typically hit on the 17th; written notice often has to land by the 10th. The annual fee (commonly around $49) bills on your join anniversary unless you cancel by the 25th of the month before. Some states now let you cancel in the member portal. Most still do not.

What fails

• Calling corporate or the club and asking them to “just cancel it.”
• Emailing the front desk with no proof of receipt.
• Cancelling at a different Planet Fitness while you are traveling. Black Card does not move the cancel desk.
• Cancelling after the 10th and expecting this month’s draft to stop.
• Killing the card instead of cancelling. They send the balance to collections.
