How to cancel ADT

The trap

Professionally installed ADT monitoring is typically a 36-month contract (often 24 in California). Cancel early and the published early-termination formula is about 75% of remaining monthly charges. After the term, it usually rolls month-to-month and wants about 30 days of notice. ADT generally does not take email as a cancel. Online cancel exists for some self-setup / ADT+ plans; most pro-install accounts still go through 800-238-2727. In-home sales get a 3-business-day federal cooling-off window. Equipment may need to come back in a prepaid box — unreturned panels become another bill.

What fails

• Emailing a sales rep who sold you the system.
• Turning the panel off. Monitoring is a separate contract.
• Assuming ADT+ month-to-month rules apply to a pro-install term. They often do not.
• Missing the 30-day notice after the term ends and rolling another cycle.
• Ignoring the 3-day cooling-off window on a door-to-door signup.
